Welcome, and thank you for visiting our website.
My name is Darren Hancock, and I have been part of the funeral profession for nearly forty years. Over that time, I have witnessed many changes and evolving trends within the industry. One of the most significant developments in recent years has been the rise of direct cremation.
Direct cremation has rightly become a more affordable option for families, offering a simple and dignified alternative. Historically, this was a service that most independent funeral directors were always able to provide. However, the market has now seen a substantial increase in large national providers, many of whom promote their services through extensive advertising and highly polished websites. At the same time, crematoria have also adapted their pricing structures to accommodate non-attended cremations.
With so many options available, it can be difficult to know what to look for. As a member of the public, are you being given clear and meaningful information, or simply presented with an attractive price and persuasive marketing?
It is important to consider what questions you should be asking — not only about what is included, but also about what may not be clearly explained.
For example: Where will my loved one be cared for?
You may read phrases such as “state-of-the-art private mortuary and care facilities,” which sound reassuring — but where are these facilities located? Are they local, or could they be many miles away? And if they are truly of such a high standard, why is there often no option to visit your loved one?
In some cases, these facilities may be large, centralised premises serving multiple areas. While this may suit an operational model, it is important to ask whether this aligns with your personal wishes and expectations for your loved one’s care.
Choosing a direct cremation does not mean you care any less. In fact, it is often quite the opposite — it reflects a desire to honour a loved one’s wishes for simplicity and dignity, without unnecessary formality.
This is precisely why I offer a direct cremation service here in Oxfordshire at a comparable cost, but with a very different approach. As an independent funeral director, we are fully regulated and members of a government-recognised professional association. Our premises are inspected, and we adhere to a strict code of practice developed in consultation with regulatory bodies. This provides reassurance and accountability — something that not all providers can offer.
